What is Second Life (2L)? Second Life (known as 2L those "in the know") is a virtual world that feels like a game but, rather than having set objectives like a video game, mirrors real life in that you set your own objectives. Would you like to learn a language? See what the Rynek in downtown Krakow, Poland looks like? Fly? It's all there for you. Some have asked, "What's the point?" The great thing about 2L is that the "point" is totally up to you.
To get started, you need to get an avatar which will act as your representation in 2L:
How does Online Education really work?Great question. We have all heard about learning “fully online,” but how does that work? I think many envision students sitting in the dark with a little chat window open trying to type an answer or comment but finding that, by the time they hit ‘enter,’ the point is lost in 50 other people’s posts. The Grad Center uses a free course management tool called Moodle. Here’s how it works:
Moodle Tutorials (All open in new browser windows)
Tutorial 1
Click on the image (left) for a quick illustration of how to log in to the Gradcenter Moodle and how to amend your Profile so that your classmates/instructors can get to know you.
Tutorial 2 In this demo., learn how best to navigate in the Moodle system using "breadcrumbs" and review other basic features in the program. Click on the image to the left to start this tutorial.
Tutorial 3 Follow the interactive lesson to see how discussions grow and how you can manage the traffic and your own postings.

Tutorial 4 While most of the class interaction will take place in Moodle, there is the capacity from most courses to "quickmail" out to student and/or faculty (external) e-mail addresses. At orientation we will discuss more fully the use of this tool.

But, Umm, I Want to Talk to Someone… Sometimes you just want to have a conversation with a real person. Technology is a tool for communication so you can call Joe Heslin at 888-258-5665 x209 or email him here.
Marlboro's Technology Center, where classes are held, also houses the offices of the USDA, the United Way, and Vermont Dept of Health and Human Service Department of Vocational Rehabilitation, as well as the Brattleboro Tech Collective, Downs Rachlin and Martin, and Spring Tree Maple Products. Many of these groups have worked with our graduate students, providing a practical context for, and validation of, their particular academic studies.
Our Certificate Programs can train a team of employees or an individual representative to address a company's knowledge gaps.
If your company is interested in tailored programs (based on our regular curriculum) please contact the Academic Director kbell@gradcenter.marlboro.edu to discuss training possibilities.
Accreditation All programs at the Marlboro College Graduate Center, are accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Inc. (NEASC), which accredits schools and colleges in the six New England states.
